Cheap ways to refresh any room on a budget
Posted on March 13, 2024
Are you looking to refresh your home but need to do it on a budget? You don’t have to spend a fortune to make a difference in any room in your home.
For the price of a tin of paint
Changing the colour of a room can be a relatively cheap way to refresh any room, but you don’t even have to do the whole room, you could create an accent wall to add impact without having to paint the whole room. Choose a colour that will still complement your existing curtains and furniture, so you won’t have the additional expense of changing those things too. Re-whiting the ceiling and painting any woodwork, while you are there, will also really make a difference to the room.
Another great way to refresh on a budget is by painting the tiles in your kitchen or bathroom rather than replacing them. The same goes for kitchen cupboard doors and any other storage items. A fresh lick of paint or a complete change with a new colour can completely change the look of your cupboard, storage or dining chairs.
Move it all around
It may sound cliché but moving the furniture or changing your kitchen cupboards can make a massive difference to not only how the room looks, but how you use it and feel in it. As with everything there are limitations, and you may need extension leads and have to tack the cable to your skirting board.
Your kitchen cupboards may still be organised from when you unpacked moving in. Would the kettle work over the other side? Do you need to move the mugs? Think how you use your kitchen now, and what would make small tasks easier if you changed the cupboards around. This is the same for your living room and bedrooms, can you move the TV? Would you have more floor space if you switched the bed to the other side?
Have a play around with different combinations, and you will be surprised how much difference moving things around will have. You will need to give the carpet a good vacuum when you move things around, and adding a rug to stained/well-worn areas that are now more visible will help hide marks or sun bleaching.
Re-organising your storage is another way to free up space and refresh your room. Check out our blog how to de-clutter for more top tips!
Bookshelves & new storage
Bookcases can be used to not only shake up your floor plan by dividing an open plan, or larger room into a smaller space, it can also provide a new focal point and storage for all those bits and bobs. Fabric storage boxes can be used on the bottom shelf to hide the kids’ toys, blankets, and other bits of clutter.
You can also rotate decorative items, photos, and books between your rooms in your house, for a great way to refresh a room without spending any money. From here you can see which accessories you need to buy to add to the overall style of each room without making unnecessary purchases.
Add to the walls
There are lots of different websites where you can order photos directly from your phone, some have offers where you can get up to 50, of the smaller-size photos (6×4) for free. You can also dig out that old photo album and display some wonderful older photos too! You can create a gallery wall, using different frames, all painted the same colour. You can also look for some affordable prints, and posters, or even create your own artwork to display, you can mix and match different sizes and styles to make it your own.
It may seem small, but adding a few shelves to a blank wall can change the look of the room. If you have reorganised your cupboards and storage, you can place some of the things you have sorted out on the shelves. Or it can be a place to put some photos you have printed, or a plant (you can get some awesome plastic ones) to add some interest. Adding shelves in a kitchen can clear some space from your worktops, but also your cupboards. Do you never use the blender to make a smoothie as it’s at the back of a cupboard? If you place it on a shelf, its easy to get out but also to put away.
